For migrating blue, fin and sei whales, plan around spring, broadly March to June. Sperm whales and several dolphin species provide year-round possibilities. The best date still depends on an operating tour, safe conditions and what you want to see.

Choose a year-round operator and keep weather flexibility
These are seasonal expectations, not a sighting calendar. Futurismo’s operator guidance identifies spring as the main migration period and confirms resident sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins. A whale can be present offshore without being found on your particular trip.
If a blue whale is the priority
Make the blue-whale guide your starting point. April and May sit within the spring window, but no ordinary tour can guarantee that species. Book a wildlife trip you would still value for dolphins, sperm whales and the guide’s interpretation. Avoid spending the entire holiday budget on a promise the operator does not make.
If comfort is the priority
Choose the vessel and schedule with care instead of relying on a month label. Compare catamarans, ask about conditions close to departure and keep a spare day. A summer date is not a guarantee of flat water. A sunny view from the hotel is not a substitute for the skipper’s offshore assessment.
Winter can work with the right expectations
Futurismo advertises year-round São Miguel operations. That does not mean every departure runs, nor that every other operator or harbour follows the same schedule. Read the winter guide before using November–February as a cheaper substitute for a spring blue-whale trip.
Seasonal extras need their own check
The islet swimming programme and dolphin-swimming products have separate availability rules. Terra Azul’s current dolphin-swimming listing specifies late autumn to early spring; the islet full day depends on bathing-season access. Check each reservation individually. An available half-day whale-watching calendar proves nothing about those extras.
A Ponta Delgada wildlife trip with a choice of catamaran or Zodiac, guided by a marine biologist or naturalist. The booking block above opens this specific product.
No. Wildlife is free-ranging, and the route follows conditions and sightings. Read the operator’s specific no-sighting policy before relying on a repeat trip or refund.
