Watching and swimming are different bookings
On a standard whale-watching trip, you remain on the vessel. A dolphin-swimming product includes guided preparation for entering the ocean and equipment specified by the operator. Wild dolphins can approach or leave freely. The guide may decide that the sea, species or behaviour makes water entry unsuitable.
Compare the verified products
| Product | Key requirement | Seasonal or price check |
|---|
| Picos de Aventura swim | Must swim unassisted; moderate fitness | Checked starting price €150 per person; verify your date |
| Terra Azul Atlantic Experience | Guided water entry from a Zodiac; restrictions apply | Listing specifies late autumn to early spring; verify swimmer fare |
Picos lists a professional guide and snorkelling equipment. It excludes pregnant travellers and people with spinal injuries. Terra Azul supplies neoprene gear, poncho/windguard, guide, skipper and specialist Zodiac. Its restrictions include under-fours, pregnancy, back and mobility problems. A listed minimum age is not a substitute for the operator assessing a child’s swimming ability and confidence.
Terra Azul’s season is easy to misread
The current listing describes swimming exclusively between late autumn and early spring, depending on species, birthing season and behaviour. That differs from generic advice that dolphin swimming is a summer activity. Read the actual product calendar and ask about your dates. We do not transfer another operator’s season to this booking.
The same listing allows a discounted non-swimming observer arrangement. Because that can affect the headline minimum, we do not present its €116 listing minimum as a confirmed swimmer fare. Select the swimmer option and passenger count for an accurate comparison.
Responsible expectations
Terra Azul describes two swimmers alternating for limited encounters and prohibits touching, feeding, fins and abrupt movement near the animals. Follow the guide’s instructions, enter only when invited and let dolphins choose the distance. An encounter is not a guaranteed photograph or prolonged swim alongside a pod.
When to choose a boat-only trip
Choose whale and dolphin watching if you cannot swim unassisted, do not feel comfortable offshore, or prefer to stay dry. It remains a wildlife experience with guides and the possibility of seeing dolphins, without asking your group to meet swimming requirements. Check catamaran options if comfort is the priority.
